Crystal Renn

In February, Telegraph.co.uk published a great article on American plus-size model Crystal Renn, who, after a brush with anorexia at 16 is now one of the most sought after plus-size models in the business - and she's not just getting the typical "plus-size" jobs, either, but is working for clients like "Dolce & Gabbana and Jean Paul Gaultier" ... "Saks Fifth Avenue... and Nine West, as well as numerous Vogue spreads to her name." She has also been selected as the new face for the "high-end British chain, Evans."

Crystal Renn now and while anorexic at 16.

Renn also talks about how much better she feels now than when she was anorexic, and is speaking out about sizeism in the fashion world:

"How can you be happy if you're working out for five hours a day? People want to hire happy models. You need fat to think!" If that means cake, so be it. Alongside a healthy, largely organic diet, she doesn't worry about indulging herself. "I do what my body wants, and I don't care about gaining weight. I don't think about calories."

[...]

"We need different-size models. Bigger women need to not feel bad about their size. It's super-important to put that message across."

Crystal Renn.

I have heard of her before. I LOVE her for doing this and not being afraid to speak out about everything she's been through. She is a great role model!

I find it strange how 'plus-sized' in the fashion industry is actually a healthy, beautiful and normal sized woman.(For example, the girl on ANTM who is a size 10 is considered plus sized! Isn't size 12 the norm in the U.S.? So why is she considered plus?!) Crystal is gorgeous and she does not look plus-sized to me at all. If you saw her walking down the street you certainly would not think she was overweight. I am a curvy woman as well, and I have always had male attention, they like the curves, breasts and hips. One of the reasons that female models got so skinny was to satisfy the designers, many of which are gay men who do not design clothing for real women's bodies. Bravo to her for being healthy and beautiful!

Janine: Thanks for your comment! I always thought that gay male designers secretly wanted their models to look like barely-teenaged boys!
